The much anticipated BC Jr ‘A’ finals got underway Wednesday night in Coquitlam between the league leading Adanacs and runners up New West Salmonbellies, who are facing each other in the finals for the second consecutive year. Both teams are guaranteed a spot in the Minto as BC has two representatives due to the Adanacs being the host, but heading into the national tournament as the ultimate post-season victor of the league is the task-at-hand for these two heavyweights.
Playing in his first game since the last match of the regular season on July 7th, Simon Giourmetakis made a statement in his first post-season game by notching the opening goal for the game just a few minutes in. After a few power play goals for both teams the score would be tied at 3 after twenty minutes, in a first period that was evenly matched in all facets including goaltending, physicality, offense, defense, and special teams.

Youngster Robert Church of Coquitlam came in tied for the lead in points during the playoffs for the Adanacs. He added four more tonight against New West in the first of the series. |

Coquitlam's Mark Matthews racks up a team high six point night including five assists giving him sixteen points now in the playoffs. |

New West came out with a bit more of a spark than the A’s to start the second, as Jay Card scored with eleven seconds left on Nick Bilic’s roughing penalty that was called at the end of the first period. Riley Loewen had an astonishing go ahead goal for the A’s as he dove through the crease and managed not one, but two pump fakes as he was flying through the air to beat Brandon Mulligan. The ‘Bellies countered with a tying goal from both ex-Timbermen as Colton Clark got a great feed from Cody Bremner, but Alex Lohr’s go ahead goal was the definition of finish as he ran straight up the middle, stopped at the top of the shooting circle, spun all the way around and unleashed a wicked shot on Chris Seidel who was replaced by Brodie MacDonald after that goal.
After almost scoring short-handed when Lohr was in the penalty box for cross checking, Clark got his second goal of the evening as the ‘Bellies were on the power play just a minute later and New West went into the final period with a slim one goal lead over the A’s.

Bellie goalie Brandon Mulligan covers the top shelf, stopping Coquitlam's Matthew Dinsdale from scoring. Dinsdale went on to have a five point night including four assists. |

Coquitlam Head Coach Curt Malawsky draws up another play for his offense as the Adanacs once again had to play from behind winning game one in overtime. |
|
Tyler Digby’s goal in the first minute of the third gave the ‘Bellies a two goal lead but it was short lived as the beast from back east Mark Matthews used his big body to barge past his check and get the A’s back within one. Leading Adanac post-season points leader Robert Church had a very timely power play goal within the last five minutes of the period to tie the game up once again and send the first game of the BC finals to overtime.
Drawing first blood in OT and scoring the ultimate game winning goal was Travis Cornwall who used his impressive speed to shoot up the floor and catch Mulligan cheating a bit as he was anticipating a pass. After that goal the feel and direction of the match took a dramatic turn and Coquitlam ran away with the game in the extra ten minute frame of overtime. After three more unanswered goals from Wesley Berg, Garrett McIntosh and Church who completed his hat trick on the night, the final score was 12-8 and the A’s head into game two at Queens Park with the one game series advantage.

Coquitlam goal tendor Brodie MacDonald came off the bench in the second and stops New West's Brandon Goodwin's shot. MacDonald was a big part in giving the Adanacs a game one victory. |

New West's tender Brandon Mulligan played all but a minute of game one but can't stop Coquitlam's Intermediate call up Wesley Berg as the Adanacs put four in during overtime. |
|
A’s goalie Brodie MacDonald made 28 saves with only 2 goals against in relief of Chris Seidel and was a huge part in shutting down the New West offense. New West goaltender Brandon Mulligan played solid during regulation time and made numerous huge saves off Coquitlam’s potent offense making 42 saves in the first sixty minutes. Unfortunately the overtime period was a different story for Mulligan who was replaced by Frank Scigliano towards the end of the period but the damage was already done.
Both the A’s and the ‘Bellies played a disciplined game with only six penalties per side which was good to see in the finals as it made for exciting lacrosse. When the opportunity arose, both sides power play ended up running at 50% with three goals scored each, and all the goals were textbook plays with impressive finishes. It was never more than a two goal game until the overtime period and the final score doesn’t necessarily reflect the feel of the game during regulation. The ‘Bellies will be hoping for home floor advantage to even up the series as they head back to Queens Park Arena to host game two on Friday night.
