VICTORIA (3) vs NANAIMO (6)
Taking their Island rivalry to the next level and facing each other for the first time in the post season, the Victoria/Nanaimo matchup in the first round has all the makings of a quality series. After rounding out the regular season by playing three games in four days the Timbermen had four days to prepare themselves for the first round before they headed down the ever-familiar Island highway to Bear Mountain Arena for game one. Placed two spots higher in the season rankings the Shamrocks may have been the favourite on paper, but in the short best-of-three series the T-Men had their sights on a road win before they host game two on Sunday.
Both teams traded momentum in the first two periods with Nanaimo taking the one goal lead at the first break and then Victoria breaking out in the second with two power play goals from Blair Pinnock to tie the game up at 7. In the final period each team would put the same amount of shots on net but the T-Men made more count with Kyle Hofer getting the eventual game winner and Ryan Forslund providing the insurance goal on a set up started with Nanaimo goalie Scott Bannister. Final score from Bear Mountain Arena was 10-8 for the visiting T-Men who now head home with the advantage for game two.

Continuing his streak of points in the BCJALL since July 1st, Joey Fendick had a seven point (4 goals 3 helpers) night for the Timbermen on Saturday followed by Hofer with a hat trick and three assists, and ‘tender Bannister held the iron together as he faced the most shots of the two goalies and had two helpers of his own. Casey Jackson had four points for the ‘Rocks in the losing effort, and teammates Karsen Leung and Blair Pinnock each had two goals and one assist.
Game two gets underway at 7:30 Tuesday night at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

DELTA (4) vs BURNABY (5)
Over on the mainland the Islanders were looking to expand their winning streak of five games into the post-season as they hosted the Lakers for game one of the other first round series. Both teams played each other for their last game of the regular season in a match that saw Delta take the game by a score of 15-3 and game one of their post-season series had much of the same feeling.
Six different Delta players would get on the scoresheet in the first period alone, but penalty trouble would give the Lakers the opportunity to close the gap with two power play goals from Jackson Decker and Blake Mattinson, followed by one at even strength. Having a three goal cushion the Islanders showed no signs of letting up for the rest of the game scoring seven in the middle frame and five more in the final period. 18-6 was the final from the Ladner Arena.
Burnaby played a disciplined game with their only penalties being called in the third period including two delay of game calls for tossing the ball out of play inadvertently, but the Islanders didn’t need a power play to get their game going with all their goals coming at regular strength.
Chase Clark played a hand in four of the Lakers five goals with his four assist, and Decker came out of the game scoring three of their five goals and a helper on Mattinson’s PP goal in the first. Patrick Baliss and Devon Winters split the goaltending duties for the Lakers, and Blake Duncan held in for the Islanders all game making 34 saves. Not that their game needed much improving but Delta was in the penalty box a lot on Saturday night resulting in half of Burnaby’s goals coming while being a man up, and Alan Casey spending the most time in the box with four minor penalties. The rest of the squad picked up the slack with Logan Schuss leading his team with 6 points, Alec Tuura with one goal and four assists, Ryan Keith had a hat trick and one helper, and there were eight other Delta players with three points on the night.
Game two in this series goes down on Sunday night at 7pm at Bill Copeland Arena in Burnaby.
