Walt Weaver Night was a great success Tuesday night, June 1st at Queens Park Arena. The largest crowd of the year was in attendance to not only salute Walt for all that he has given to Junior Bellies lacrosse but also to witness the intense rivalry that is always part of any game between the Coquitlam Junior Adanacs and the Bellies.
The fact that the Adanacs and the Bellies were the only two undefeated teams in the 2010 season ramped up the anticipation even more. Prior to the start of the game there was a great buzz in the lobby that is usually only felt in the play-offs.
In a ceremony between the 1st and 2nd periods Walt’s number 6 jersey was retired. Murray Lehman and Forrest Day, who had preceded Walt as the Bellies senior executive presented Walt with a framed jersey and current Bellies player Jordan Catton, who is the last player to wear number 6, unveiled the plaque hanging in the rafters.
His two daughters, his son, his wife and his mother joined Walt on the floor for the ceremony. In a nice touch both teams took time out of their between period time to return to the floor to witness the honours being bestowed on one of the greatest players to ever wear the Junior Salmonbellies uniform and the man who has been hugely instrumental in stabilizing and growing this historic franchise.
A close checking game, marred to some degree by too many penalties being called, saw the Bellies come out on top 9-8. The two teams play each other twice more in the regular season and the possibility of a Bellies and Coquitlam meeting in the play-offs is already becoming a much discussed topic amongst many lacrosse fans. |
