In their first meeting of the season the Lakers paid a visit to the Shamrocks on May 8th where a late third period comeback for Burnaby forced overtime, and they would eventually take the game by a score of 11-9. Sunday night in Burnaby you could smell a little bit of revenge cooking up, in the form of a visitor win from the Shamrocks.

The game was jump-started with some aggression as ‘Rocks goalie Adam Hickey left his net to grab a loose ball that was tossed up high immediately following the faceoff, and was promptly sent to the floor with a hard, clean check from a Burnaby runner. Realizing how far he was out of his net and that the take down was legit Hickey sprang back up and returned to the comfort of his crease. After each team rang the post twice it was Sean Nugent who would draw first blood as he picked up a juicy rebound off Burnaby keeper Brodie MacDonald. Victoria would be given an opportunity to extend their lead with just a few minutes left in the opening period as Braidy Webb would get called for roughing, and Jake Emms would make no mistake as he unloaded a rocket from the top right hand side of the shooting circle, squeaking it between MacDonald’s upper arm and the net.

The Lakers would eventually crack Hickey in the second period as Kyle Kari got a feed from Jaxson Lee and buried it from the shooting circle, followed by Mackenzie Davis getting lucky from way outside the circle as he beat Hickey short side on the power play. As Victoria does so well, the go-ahead goal for the ‘Rocks in the period would come short-handed when Blair Pinnock made use of a fast-break, set up nicely from Graeme Scott and goaltender Hickey who had good vision to send the ball down as Burnaby was changing.

Sean Nugent of the Shamrocks picks up the loose ball helping the Rock defense to play near perfect all night.

Ryan Sage of Victoria dives across the crease as Lake defender Jordon Gosselin gives him a shot in the back.

Rock forward Curtis McKinnon tries to sneak one past Laker tender Brodie MacDonald who ranks second in the league for save percentage.

In the tight, low-scoring game so far it was apparent one team had to make a break for it in the third; Victoria had to protect and build their lead, and Burnaby would have to be assertive and take control if they wanted a sniff at a win.

After a few more balls hitting the posts for both sides, Casey Jackson cushioned the lead for the ‘Rocks, Pinnock would throw in his second of the night, and Liam Kelly would round out scoring for Victoria. Burnaby’s Kari would also pot his second goal of the night as he took advantage of a rebound and quickly shot it past Hickey. With just under half a period left in the game Braidy Webb would try and get his teammates adrenaline pumping as he faced off in a fight with Tyler Matheson.

Both parties were in agreence of what was going down, so both lids came off and it turned out to be not a bad tilt; each player landed initial blows but when they got closer they both took each other down and were separated. The rest of the period remained the same as the Shamrocks doubled up the Lakers by a score of 6-3, extracting the revenge as planned. There was no lack of emotion to this game, especially in the third period, and even Burnaby goalie MacDonald had to be held back from paying a visit to the Victoria bench at the end of the game.

Goaltending was a key part to this game and although MacDonald leaves with the loss he did make some key saves for Burnaby when needed. At the other end of the floor Hickey had a good night between the iron and except for some big rebounds, played a solid game making fourteen saves in the third period alone and only allowing one goal. Scoring was well dispersed for Victoria who had eleven players on the sheet, five of them with two points, and one of those being Hickey who had two assists in the winning effort.
