Deadlocked

There may have been three games difference between New West (3gp), and Victoria (6gp), but the two teams were neck and neck in the standings in the fourth and fifth spots (respectively) before their game Sunday night at Queens Park Arena.

The Shamrocks took control in the first period, jumping on as many fast break opportunities as they could to catch New West off guard. Even with Victoria goaltender Adam Hickey breaking his stick inside the first seven minutes he managed well with the adjustment to wood and then back to plastic. With their four goals in the first including two from Blair Pinnock, the ‘Rocks would head into the break with a 4-1 lead over the ‘Bellies.

Playing from behind is something New West hadn’t experienced so far this year, so they stepped up their scoring in the second and put three goals past Hickey. Victoria would carry over some of their momentum from the opening period as Casey Jackson scored both second period goals for the ‘Rocks to maintain their lead over New West and keep the game rolling in their favour. Emotions seemed to run a little high as the ‘Bellies were in the penalty box more than the Shamrocks but neither was able to capitalize on special teams in the middle frame. At the very tail end of the period New West player Kris Liset and ‘Rocks goalie Hickey both had their eye on a loose ball and collided pretty hard; both were assessed charging penalties and the second would end 6-4 in favour of the visitors again.

Victoria's Ryan Sage does everything he can to slow down Bellie forward Tyler Digby who's fourth in points for New Westminster.

Mark Negrin of New West gets stuffed here by Victoria tender Adam Hickey on a night when Hickey would break two sticks during the game.

New West goalie Frank Scigliano stops Shamrock hot shot of the night, Casey Jackson. Jackson finished with a four point night, top spot for Victoria.

On a night of solid goaltending by both teams, Victoria's Casey Jackson still manages to one time it by Bellie tender Frank Scigliano..

While the Shamrocks came out hard with a strong start and rode their momentum into the following two periods, the ‘Bellies appeared to be gathering speed as the game went on and playing from behind for two periods wasn’t something they were used to. Capitalizing on a high sticking penalty, Mark Negrin would round out his fourth hat trick in four games this year, getting the ‘Bellies to within one. Jeff Sproule would tie the game up for the home team and Tyler Digby would appear to be the hometown hero for the night, as he put one past Hickey to take the slim lead with just ninety seconds left in the game. Not to let their hard work slip away this quick, Victoria would counter back in the final thirty seconds with Ryan Sage feeding Karsen Leung, who beat New West keeper Frank Scigliano and would send this game to a ten minute overtime period to try and get a clear winner.

After sixty minutes where the runners seemed to be the focus of the game, both goalies would stand their ground in the OT period; both Hickey and Scigliano stopped nine shots a piece to keep the game deadlocked at 8 goals, resulting in the second tie game of the weekend.

On paper this looked to be a first period to forget for the ‘Bellies. In their three previous games they averaged scoring 5.6 goals and 17 shots on net in the first periods alone. Tonight their only goal in the first period was with the man advantage, and Victoria outshot them 16-6 in the opening twenty minutes. The bright spot for the ‘Bellies would have to be playing from behind for two periods and managing to come back and get at least a point out of the game. Obviously maintaining their first and second period performance for a win would have been better for the ‘Rocks, but they shouldn’t be too disappointed only getting the one point either, as they kept high scoring New West to under ten goals and made them work hard to come back.
