Laker's Take Over
April 28, 2010
After starting the season on the road for two games, the Langley Thunder would play their home opener on Tuesday night and dedicate the game to Chris Friesen, a member of their Intermediate A team who passed away on March 25th. A video tribute was played on the jumbo screens at the LEC in front of his Intermediate teammates and the junior ‘A’ team, who faced each other on the floor. Chris’ parents Randy and Ingrid held the opening faceoff, and the message ‘Be the Best’ was left on the screen for everyone to take in.

When the game got underway there was lots of contact in the crease, behind the play and after whistles, resulting in the refs sending players from both sides to the penalty box. Ten minutes into the first the score was tight, but in the last half Burnaby started to break away and take control over the Thunder.

Langley would start the second behind by two goals and a man down for five minutes, after team Captain Colten Hayes got called for running Laker goalie Brodie MacDonald at the end of the first. Langley managed to kill the five minutes, and following the penalty Reegan Comeault would put two goals past MacDonald. In the dying seconds of the period the refs would call off a goal by Jaxson Lee for being in the crease, where he picked up a rebound close to the line and fired past Keenan Lambright. The call would normally have been forgotten about shortly after, except for those four huge jumbo screens that promptly showed the slow motion replay in which Lee clearly didn’t enter the crease at all. Despite the call, the Lakers still had a two goal cushion heading into the final twenty minutes.

In the third Burnaby scored two more goals to protect their lead and for the second game in this short season the Thunder would go an entire period without a goal. From the stands it seemed Langley seemed to lose their momentum whenever they had a good stride going, and their frustration only mounted as the game went on. Two goals each from Colton Porter and Comeault wasn’t enough to make the impact they needed, and the Lakers cruised to a 9-5 victory. The Lakers power play could have used a boost, but Mac Davis’ 5 point night coupled with six other players scoring goals, showed the Lakers had no problem distributing the ball in their win.
