Ball Breaker Day 2
April 18, 2010
With Coquitlam, Delta, and New Westminster reigning supreme after day 1, Sunday would be one last chance for players to solidify or earn a spot on their teams’ rosters before the season officially gets underway on Friday the 23rd.

Coquitlam left the arena on Saturday night with a victory over Burnaby and started Sunday where they left off, getting the jump on Langley with three quick goals in the first period of game one. Both teams would switch goalies at the halfway mark of the match with Andrew Copeland relieving Devon Winter, and Dan Lewis taking over for Chris Seidel. After a few minutes without scoring, a fight would liven up the game with John Canil and former Adanac Scott Rouse dropping the gloves as well as any other equipment that would get in the way of throwing punches. Both had good throws but it was over pretty quick for the time it took to get going. Goals from Jeffrey Cornwall and Brandon Bertoia sealed the 7-3 win for Coquitlam; but before the Thunder were done it was Zach Porter who would be the only person to crack Lewis on the weekend, sneaking a ball in five hole.

New West and Burnaby would be the meat of the Sunday Ball Breaker sandwich, providing goals-a-plenty in the middle game. It was also a game of catch the leader as New West would go ahead by a goal, only to have Burnaby tie it minutes later. Tied at five goals apiece after the first twenty minutes it seemed the second period would be much of the same, until the Lakers started to get in a bit of penalty trouble and New West took advantage. With the ‘Bellies leading by three going into the final twenty minutes, Burnaby just couldn’t get that final break to re-gain a lead even with impressive performances from Jordan Jarvis, Mac Davis, and Chase Clark; it just wasn’t enough for New West’s offensive onslaught. Leif Mydske ended the night with four goals, Mark Negrin had a hat trick, and both Matt MacGrotty and Jeff Sproule would have two goals apiece; making New West the scoring leaders of the tournament with twenty four goals over two days.

As the hosts, Port Coquitlam would open and close the tournament taking on Delta for the last game of the weekend. Looking to get a win to even out their loss from day one, the Saints jumped ahead of the Islanders 3-1, and kept pressing in the second. This whole tournament is a chance for Intermediates to get a taste of Junior ‘A’ floor time and the Saints call-ups definitely made the most of their opportunities; Garrett Chan had an impressive hat trick with three top-quality goals, David McSkimming and Cory Cop also had goals to help the hosts break even on the weekend, winning 9-5 over the Islanders. Ric Tuura would score two in the middle frame for Delta including a beauty short-handed goal while down two men, but their penalty trouble would be their downfall, and the score would and 9-5 in favour of Poco.

To end the Ball Breaker weekend Coquitlam and New Westminster were 2-0, Delta and Poco 1-1, and Langley and Burnaby would end off 0-2.

Both Nanaimo and Victoria were in action on Sunday as well, taking their Island Rivalry up to Campbell River where they received a warm welcome from their Island neighbours. For the second consecutive year Nanaimo managed to take a game off Victoria in the pre-season, and just like 2009 it was a one-goal win. Trailing 10-5 after two periods of play, the Shamrocks came back to give Nanaimo a tough last period, but the final score would be an 11-10 win for the Timbermen. Casey Jackson was the leading scorer for the Shamrocks with four goals, and Cody Bremner lead the T-men with one goal and four assists.
